in 2022, mainly due to the war in Ukraine
million people worldwide were forcibly displaced in 2022
This is 19 million more than in 2021 and two and a half times more than a decade ago
Failure to implement Goal 16 will result in various consequences:
- increase in armed conflicts;
- lack of social equality;
- institutional instability;
- a threat to human rights and governance;
- hindering the development of societies.
- According to the Global Peace Index 2020, only 14% of the world is internally free from conflicts and violence. There is also a growing number of victims of violence around the world, with approximately 500,000 people dying in 2018 in connection with armed conflicts.
- According to a 2020 Oxfam report, the richest 1% of people in the world have more wealth than the poorest 6.9 billion. This clearly shows the existing social inequality which has a negative impact on social stability.
- According to the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2019, only 22% of countries in the world achieved a score above 60 points (where 100 means no corruption). This means that corruption is still a widespread problem in many countries, which affects the effective operation of public institutions.
